Zimbabwe Peace Project demands the immediate release of Itai Dzamara

Harare, 10 March 2015.

Zimbabwe Peace Project (ZPP) is disturbed by the forced disappearance /abduction of Itai Dzamara on Monday March 9, 2015. It is regrettable that enforced disappearance still exists in Zimbabwe. Itai who has led the Occupy Africa Unity Square is a Zimbabwean citizen who should be protected by the rights guaranteed by the constitution. Itai a father, husband, brother, colleague and friend was forcibly taken away by 5 men in a white Isuzu double Cab vehicle as he had his hair groomed in a Barber shop. ZPP believes that abduction or forced disappearance is archaic and should not be allowed to be used on citizens of this or any other country.

ZPP therefore expects the government to force those holding Itai, for whatever reason, to release him immediately. It is alarming to note that such grave human rights abuses still happen in Zimbabwe even at a time that President Robert Mugabe chairs both the regional body SADC and the continental grouping African Union.

It is high time those who carry out these disappearances are made to account for their actions.

ZPP calls for Itai to be released or be brought before a court of law if he is accused of committing a crime.
