Low efficiency in fighting corruption in Kosovo, about 2,000 unsolved cases by the Prosecution and Courts in 2014

FOL Movement held a press conference and presented the anti-corruption statistics of Police, Prosecution, Courts and the statistics of the Office of the National Coordinator for Fighting Economic Crimes in 2014.

Fidan Kalaja from FOL Movement said that data on corruption cases shows that Kosovo Police, Prosecution and Courts during 2014 have dealt with and received a total of 3526 anti-corruption cases.

From these cases, Kosovo Police during the reporting period has handled a total of 557 cases, among them 22 cases, were about the criminal offense of corruption taking bribes, 47 cases of giving bribe and 488 cases, abuse of official position or authority. Regarding these cases, Kosovo police have arrested 63 people.

According to him, the Prosecution during this reporting period has filed a total of 1,987 cases, among them 41 cases, were about the criminal offense of corruption taking bribes, and has solved 22 cases, 60 cases were about giving bribe and 48 cases solved, whereas misuse of official position or authority there were 1886 cases and 697 cases were solved.

Courts during the reporting period filed a total of 982 cases, among them 126 cases, were about the criminal offense of corruption taking bribes, and 36 cases have been solved, 66 cases were about giving bribe and 25 cases solved, whereas misuse of official position or authority there were 790 cases and 194 cases have been solved, said Fidan Kalaja.

Fidan Kalaja said that in general there were 1218 unsolved cases of corruption in 2014, by the Prosecutions of Kosovo, and 727 cases by the Courts.

FOL Movement has also monitored the performance and commitment of the Office of the National Coordinator for Fighting Economic Crimes regarding the seizure and confiscation of assets in 2014. In 2014, records of the Office of the National Coordinator for Fighting Economic Crimes show that the approximate value of assets frozen or seized amounts about 31 million euro. Over 1 million cash, over 17 apartments, 8 villas, 11 houses, 2 construction buildings, a hotel, 6 business premises, 30 kg gold, as well as restaurants, factories, clinics etc. Regarding the property seized there are also about 15 court decisions which amounts around 25 thousand euro, which will go to the state budget.
