The UNCAC Coalition Working Group on Victims of Corruption today released a letter calling on authorities in Peru to guarantee the right to legal standing for victims of corruption in the country.
The letter comes after the Peruvian Prosecutor’s Office rejected a request by Asociación Kuskachay to represent victims in a corruption case, alleging that the only victims in such cases are State entities.
Instances of corruption result in collective damages to broad swathes of society, and individuals and communities must be recognized as victims.
National and international standards require Peru to grant legal standing to victims of corruption and guarantee their right to justice and reparation.
We call on authorities in Peru to respect these national and international obligations and respect the rights of victims to legal standing.
