Why do asset and interest declarations matter?
In many countries, politicians and government officials are required to report on their assets and interests as they enter public office.
When these declarations are comprehensive and accurate, and especially when they are available for the relevant authorities and the wider public, they become a powerful tool to identify potential conflicts of interest or signs of illegal enrichment.
In the hands of civil society and the media, data contained in asset and interest declarations can be cross-referenced with other datasets and used for investigations, advocacy and awareness-raising campaigns.
