UNCAC Coalition launches consultation on the next phase of the Implementation Review Mechanism (IRM)

1 August 2024 – The UNCAC Coalition has launched a consultation on the next phase of the Implementation Review Mechanism (IRM) – the mechanism used by States to track and improve their compliance with the UN Convention against Corruption (UNCAC)

We invite civil society organizations, academics, private sector representatives and others to provide input on our proposals by 8 August 2024

The information obtained will be used as part of our campaign to advocate for a stronger and more accountable UNCAC IRM.

Background

The UN Convention against Corruption (UNCAC) is the world’s only comprehensive, global anti-corruption treaty. It creates obligations for States across the anti-corruption spectrum.

The review mechanism for the Convention, however, is weak, not transparent, not participatory and highly inefficient

It is an ineffective tool for genuinely holding States accountable.

Our campaign

States Parties are currently discussing the scope and format of the next phase of the IRM. They are projected to make a decision at the next Conference of the States Parties (CoSP) in Qatar in late 2025.

In this context, the UNCAC Coalition has launched a campaign to push States to make the IRM #FitForPurpose. Our objective is for States to enhance accountability and participation in the UNCAC IRM.

Take action

A strong and accountable UNCAC review mechanism is a cornerstone for the success of the global fight against corruption.

We urge civil society organizations around the globe to participate in our consultation and join our campaign to make the UNCAC review mechanism #FitForPurpose.
