Mission and vision
Transparency Macedonia (TM) was established in 2001. Its mission is to promote a community free of corruption and to continuously challenge the tolerance for corruption.
General description of the CSO work in the anti-corruption area
Transparency Macedonia (TM) is an independent, non-governmental, non-profit, research and advocacy organization, which works on rule of law and fundamental rights issues in Republic of Macedonia and the Balkan region. Since its inception in November 2001, TM has identified transparency and anti-corruption as the niche issues which are the focus of its activities and define its role in society. TM promotes transparency and public access to information and develops policy recommendations on the ways to eradicate corruption in society. Corruption is a phenomenon still strongly present in Macedonia which undermines the fragile foundations of democracy, challenges the concept of good governance, creates inequality and violates human rights.
Specific description of the CSO work in relation to the UNCAC
In the past decade TM has produced a series of high quality research publications on topics of interest. The book ‘Democracy Held Captive’ is the only publication in the country which gives an overview of the ownership structures in the main Macedonian printed and electronic media, as well as the history of the ownership relations and ownership transfers in the period of 1991-2011. It illustrates the importance and the effects of the ownership relations on media pluralism, editorial independence and involvement of politics and business influences in Macedonian media in the last two decades of democratic transition in the country. The ‘Money and Politics’ publications gave a comprehensive overview and analyses of the financing of political parties, both regular and election financing, and identified a range of irregularities and violations of laws, shortfalls in the legislation and absence of transparency and openness in the work of state bodies and political parties. The “Monthly reports on the situation in corruption in society”, a nearly decade long monitoring exercise, has produced a detailed overview of the shortcomings that emerge in the functioning of all three branches of government, citing hundreds of specific cases, as well as phenomena and tendencies in the areas that are the subject of observation. The research outputs and situation analyses have always been coupled with specific recommendations and advice in the area of accountable and legal anti-corruption work.

Through a series of activities, TM aims to create a society without corruption by continually challenging the existing tolerance for corruption. To achieve this, TM works on: strengthening good governance at the national and local levels; developing standards and anti-corruption practices in the public sphere; promoting anti-corruption standards in political parties, business and civil society; raising public awareness on anti-corruption; as well as building partnerships and establishing anti-corruption networks. TM has the experience, expertise and broad participation in the fight against corruption within the state, as well as through global and regional initiatives.
