Juliet Ibekaku-Nwagwu is chair of the Victims of Corruption Working Group, CEO of the African Governance Centers and Post-Doctoral researched at the University of Sussex. She is also a Council member of the Commonwealth Lawyers Association (CLA). Through these roles, she works to advance global efforts to tackle illicit financial flows and to promote the recovery of stolen assets and their sustainable return to victims, in line with the UN Convention against Corruption (UNCAC).
Her areas of expertise include anti-corruption, anti-money laundering and counter-financing of terrorism, international criminal law, and international asset recovery – particularly the use of recovered assets for sustainable development. She has been actively engaged in international standard-setting processes, including through the Financial Action Task Force (FATF) and its West African regional body, GIABA.
As Special Assistant to the President of Nigeria on Justice Sector Reform and International Relations, she led the negotiation team that recovered more than USD 800 million for the government of Nigeria, and she played a key role in drafting major anti-money laundering and mutual legal assistance legislation in Nigeria.
