Coalition calls for release of leading Algerian anti-corruption activist

7 September 2010.- The UNCAC Coalition of CSOs is deeply concerned about the arrest and continuing detention by the Algerian authorities of leading Algerian anti-corruption activist Djilali Hadjadj and calls for his release. Hadjadj was arrested on Sunday 5 September 2010 at the airport in the north-eastern city of Constantine and as of last information is still being held by police. The UNCAC Coalition also calls on the Algerian government to abide by its international law obligations regarding due process and proper treatment of detainees.

Hadjadj is the president of a local anti-corruption organisation « L'Association algérienne de lutte contre la corruption> (AACC). He is an outspoken anti-corruption advocate who in recent weeks published several articles attacking both the president of Algeria and the new anti-corruption office created last month. His organisation is a member of the UNCAC Coalition, a global network of civil society organisations.

29 June 2010 - This past weekend in Toronto, G20 Leaders met again to discuss the global financial system and the world economy. The global financial crisis has shown most clearly that the stability of the global financial system is at stake. Huge amounts of money are being shifted and transferred, often through multiple borders and jurisdictions. Scores of member organisations from the UNCAC Coalition signed a statement “Call for G20 action to tackle illicit financial flows,” prior to the G20 summit in April of this year, to urge heads of state from the world’s leading economies to take responsibility.
